HVAC System Sizing Calculator (Simplified Manual J)

HVAC Sizing Guide (Manual J)

What is Manual J? The industry-standard method for calculating proper HVAC sizing, accounting for climate, insulation, windows, orientation, and 100+ other factors.

Why Proper Sizing Matters:
  • Oversized: Short-cycles, poor humidity control, higher costs, shorter lifespan
  • Undersized: Can't keep up on hot/cold days, runs constantly, high bills
  • Right-Sized: Optimal comfort, efficiency, and longevity
Standard AC Sizes:
  • 1.5 tons: 600-900 sq ft
  • 2 tons: 900-1,200 sq ft
  • 2.5 tons: 1,200-1,500 sq ft
  • 3 tons: 1,500-1,800 sq ft
  • 4 tons: 2,000-2,400 sq ft
  • 5 tons: 2,400-3,000 sq ft

Important: This is a rough estimate. Get a professional Manual J calculation before purchasing. Many contractors use "rules of thumb" that result in oversized systems.
