About This Calculator
Use the gpa calculator when you want faster calculations with a clear method behind every result.
Calculate your GPA (Grade Point Average) from course grades and credit hours using the standard 4.0 scale. Supports letter grades and percentage grades, and shows what GPA you need from remaining courses to hit a target.
If your workflow expands, pair this calculator with Grade Needed for Final Calculator and Test Score Percentile Calculator to cross-check assumptions and build a stronger analysis chain.
Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours). Grade points: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.
Example Calculation
The worked example below demonstrates how the input fields translate into the final output. Use it as a quick validation pass before entering your own numbers.
- Course 1: A (4.0) — 3 credits
- Course 2: B+ (3.3) — 4 credits
- Course 3: B (3.0) — 3 credits
Explanation of Results
Result Interpretation
(4.0×3 + 3.3×4 + 3.0×3) / (3+4+3) = (12 + 13.2 + 9) / 10 = 34.2 / 10 = 3.42. Heavier-credit courses have more influence on GPA — a B in a 4-credit course pulls your average down more than a B in a 1-credit course.
FAQ
How is GPA calculated?
GPA = sum of (grade points × credit hours) divided by total credit hours. Grade points: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0. Each school may have slight variations, especially for +/- grades or weighted GPAs.
What GPA do I need to graduate or get into grad school?
Most US universities require a minimum 2.0 GPA (C average) to graduate. Graduate school admissions typically require 3.0+ GPA (B average), with competitive programs expecting 3.5+. Medical school: 3.7+ is competitive. Law school: 3.5+ for top schools. Scholarships often require 3.0 or 3.5 minimum.
Can I raise my GPA significantly in my final semesters?
It gets harder as more credits accumulate. With 60 credits at 2.8 GPA, you need a 4.0 for 30 more credits to reach ~3.2. Use this formula: Target cumulative GPA = (Current GPA × Current Credits + Future GPA × Future Credits) / Total Credits. The more credits you've completed, the less impact future grades have.
