Older units: 8-10 SEER, 2000s: 10-13 SEER, Modern minimum: 14 SEER

Standard: 14-16 SEER, High-efficiency: 18-20 SEER, Premium: 20-25 SEER

Typical: 800-1,200 hours/year (varies by climate)

US average: $0.14/kWh (check your utility bill)

Understanding SEER Ratings

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio): Measures cooling output divided by energy input. Higher SEER = more efficient = lower operating costs.

SEER Rating Guide:
  • 8-10 SEER: Very old units (pre-1990s)
  • 10-13 SEER: Older units (1990s-2000s)
  • 14-15 SEER: Minimum for new installs (federal standard)
  • 16-18 SEER: High efficiency, good value
  • 19-21 SEER: Very high efficiency
  • 22+ SEER: Premium, highest efficiency
Is Higher SEER Worth It?
  • 16 SEER is the "sweet spot" for most homes
  • 18+ SEER makes sense in hot climates with high usage
  • Each SEER point costs ~$200-300 more upfront
  • Payback depends on usage, climate, and electricity rates

Tip: Don't just look at SEER. Also consider proper sizing, installation quality, and duct sealing for maximum efficiency.
